Morrison spends more than A$700 million to upgrade military bases, expands military exercises with U.S.

As relations between China and Australia become increasingly tense, Australian Prime Minister Morrison announced on Wednesday (28) that A$747 million (about HK$4.5 billion) will be spent on upgrading facilities at four military bases in the Northern Territory to enhance joint exercises with the U.S. Marine Corps and other allies in response to the increasingly uncertain global and regional situation, and a commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The Northern Territory’s Robertson Barracks Closed Training Area, Kangaroo Flats Training Area, Bundy Hill Training Area and Bradshaw Field Training Area will be upgraded with firing ranges, simulated land combat facilities and airfield runways. Morrison said in Darwin that the military investment will help keep the ADF ready and ensure they have access to the best training facilities in the world. He added that the military investment not only ensures the security of Australian nationals, but also promotes peace in an uncertain global and regional situation.

The United States and Australia hold joint exercises every two years, the next will be held in August this year, is expected to participate in more than 30,000 soldiers. Australian Defense Minister Dutton earlier warned that Australia should not ignore the Taiwan issue when dealing with conflict with China. Interior Secretary Mike Pezzullo warned on Tuesday that the world is in a tense and frightening situation, and that the drums of war are already beating and Australia needs to be prepared.
