The Breitbart News reported on April 26 that Los Angeles Police Department Officer Deon Joseph sent an open letter to Lakers star LeBron James. Officer Joseph called James’ attack on the police “irresponsible and disturbing. Officer Joseph also requested a one-on-one meeting with James to discuss ways to improve relations between the police and the community.
Earlier, James, a professional basketball star, tweeted a controversial post about a white police officer in Ohio who killed a black girl at knifepoint, saying, “You’re next in line for accountability.
Joseph is known as “Angel Cop” because he works in one of the most dangerous areas of Los Angeles, Skid Row.
After praising James for his charitable contributions to the community, Officer Joseph described the basketball star’s comments as “a manifestation of hate rooted in a lack of understanding of the danger of the situation.
Joseph also said, “I hope to sit down with you one day. As a man of faith, I can’t have any hatred for you. But I do feel that I can help you by understanding the reality of the police profession, in addition to the other side of the story that you need to hear. “
Joseph writes, “You’re tired of the deaths of black people? So am I. You abhor racism and police brutality? But you can’t paint such a broad and devastating picture of a group of 800,000 men and women police officers of all races, creeds, and sexual orientations who are also mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, preachers, coaches, community members, and regular people.”
Joseph went on to ask for a meeting with James, saying, “I think if you actually sat down yourself and had a real honest and open dialogue with police officers, you would likely find that those of us who deserve your hatred and disgust are not the monsters you think we are.”
