According to Taiwan Central News Agency reported on April 26, a bar in Shanghai for the live broadcast of the Oscars ceremony, the organizers and in social media nods to the best Chinese director Zhao Ting, and was blocked by the Great Firewall of China, the event organizer’s virtual private Internet VPN service also cut off for nearly 2 hours.
It is reported that the event, which was held by Zhao Ting’s NYU alumni at a small bar on the Bund in Shanghai, attracted more than 30 people on the day the event hoped to watch the Oscars through a YouTube live stream. But the organizer confirmed after nearly two hours of postponement that authorities cut off the VPN; and its account was shut down after it posted a post on WeChat praising Zhao Ting.
Publicly, Zhao was born in Beijing in 1982, attended high school in London and later earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in the United States and a bachelor’s degree in film from New York University. Zhao Ting’s previous public comments, such as “China is a country of lies,” have halted the planned release of her film “Land of the Uninhabited” in China.
Reuters inquired with China’s State Internet Information Office about the interruption, but did not receive a response.
