In order to cope with the world’s warming problem, the Japanese government announced last year that it would reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and set a goal for the popularization of pure electric vehicles (EVs). However, the Japanese media reported that the Japanese government’s EV penetration target may be variable, because Japan’s pure EV charging equipment infrastructure construction has stagnated and recorded a decrease for the first time last year.
According to the report, the number of public charging facilities in Japan decreased for the first time in 2020, according to statistics from Japanese map provider Zenrin, which excludes charging pads that can only be used by specific models such as Tesla passenger cars in the United States. The number of public charging facilities in Japan was 29,214 at the end of March, down 1,000 from a year ago, the first decrease recorded by Japanese map provider Zenrin since records began in 2012.
According to the analysis, the reason for the decrease of pure electric vehicle charging facilities in Japan last year is that many commercial facilities and accommodation facilities have not renewed their equipment that has exceeded its service life because of the small number of users and the perceived advantages of installing charging equipment.
