Former Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra sparked a scandal last October when he was given an early vaccination against a Chinese state drug, but the Chinese vaccination did not save him from contracting the new coronavirus. AFP reports that how effective the Chinese vaccine is could raise serious questions in this country.
“Despite taking the necessary protective measures to avoid bringing the virus home, both my wife and I have tested positive,” Biscara tweeted Sunday. He said, “My family has taken quarantine measures, let’s not let our guard down.”
Biscara, who served as Peru’s president from 2018-2020, won his seat in the recent legislative elections but was barred by Peru’s Congress from working as a legislator temporarily because of a scandal last year over the use of his office to vaccinate early.
Biscara, 58, was caught up in the “vaccinationgate” scandal a few weeks ago, when it was revealed in February that he and 470 others had been vaccinated with the Chinese national vaccine in October, before the vaccination was officially launched nationwide. The scandal led to the resignation of Peru’s health minister, foreign minister and others.
Biscara denied using his power to advance the vaccination, claiming that his brother, his wife and he were involved in clinical trials prior to the official vaccination.
The former president, who was also accused of corruption while serving as governor from 2011-2014, was removed from the presidency by the Peruvian Congress through impeachment last November.
AFP reports that former Peruvian President Biscara’s confirmed infection may once again raise questions in Peru about the effectiveness of the Chinese national vaccine purchased by the country.
Peru is currently experiencing a second wave of the outbreak, which was triggered mainly by a Brazilian variant of the virus.
According to the latest statistics, 1.7 million people have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus in the country of 33 million people, and 59,440 have died from it.
