Indonesia’s submarine KRI Nanggala-402 was lost during a torpedo test firing exercise on the 21st, the Indonesian military said today, adding that the broken submarine was found on the seabed off Bali and confirmed that all 53 people on board were killed.
Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Yudo Margono said, “There is the wreckage of KRI Nanggala-402 (on the seabed), which was broken into three pieces.”
Hadi Tjahjanto, commander-in-chief of the Indonesian National Army, told reporters at the same time, “All 53 personnel on board were killed.”
Authorities said they received signals from a depth of more than 800 meters early this morning, and they used an underwater submersible rescue vehicle provided by Singapore to make a visual determination.
Hadi added that more wreckage from the submarine was found today, including the anchor and life jackets worn by the crew.
The Indonesian Navy said yesterday that it had found pieces of the submarine, including its contents, but had not yet confirmed the location of the submarine.
