AFP compiled official data showing that at least 3.08 million 8103 people died worldwide from the 2019 Chinese Communist Virus Disease (COVID-19) as of 10 p.m. GMT on 24 (6 p.m. Taiwan 24), with at least 145.54 million 4640 cases confirmed.
The outbreak began in China in December 2019, and the vast majority of those infected have recovered to date. However, some people continue to feel symptoms for weeks or even months after recovery.
These figures are based on daily statistics provided by national health authorities and do not include subsequent re-estimates from the statistical units of three countries – Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom – and are only a fraction of the actual total number of infections, as many mildly ill or asymptomatic patients remain undetected.
On the 23rd, the world reported 13,991 new deaths and 892,677 confirmed cases. According to the data, the countries with the highest number of new deaths were Brazil (2,914 deaths), India (2,624 deaths) and the United States (962 deaths).
The United States remains the country with the most severe epidemic, with a total of 571,199 deaths and 31,990,207 confirmed cases.
Other countries with severe outbreaks include Brazil (386,416 deaths and 14,237,078 confirmed cases), Mexico (214,504 deaths and 2,233,430 confirmed cases), India (189,544 deaths and 16,610,481 confirmed cases), and the United Kingdom (127,385 deaths and 4,410,109 confirmed cases).
As a percentage of the population, Hungary had the highest mortality rate, with 271 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by the Czech Republic (270), Bosnia-Herzegovina (250), Montenegro (232) and Bulgaria (226).
Regionally, there were 1,045,965 deaths and 49,211,628 confirmed cases in Europe; 880,392 deaths and 27,913,063 confirmed cases in Latin America and the Caribbean; and a total of 595,072 deaths and 33,153,693 confirmed cases in the United States and Canada.
In Asia, there were 312,321 deaths and 23,216,145 confirmed cases; in the Middle East, there were 125,727 deaths and 751,960 confirmed cases; in Africa, there were 119,586 deaths and 4,480,252 confirmed cases; in Oceania, there were 1040 deaths and 42,605 confirmed cases.
