U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Passes Bill to Boycott Beijing Olympics

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee passed an amendment to prohibit the U.S. government from sending any diplomats to the Beijing Olympics in response to serious human rights violations by the Chinese Communist Party.

On Wednesday, the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee adopted an amendment proposed by Senators Tim Kaine, Ed Markey, and Mitt Romney.

The Beijing Olympics would be subject to a diplomatic boycott in light of the Chinese Communist Party’s genocide against the Uighurs.

U.S. Senator Mitt Romney: “The amendment calls for a diplomatic boycott, so we won’t be sending any diplomats, to the (Beijing) Olympics,”

Romney also condemned the Olympic Committee for granting the Chinese Communist government, which persecutes human rights, the right to host the Olympics.

Senator Mitt Romney: “It’s sickening that the IOC is giving Beijing the platform to host the world (Olympics), and this country (the Chinese Communist Party) is hosting the Olympics while it’s genociding its people. It’s shocking and it’s outrageous.”

Separately, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report Wednesday urging the U.S. government to publicly express its concerns about Beijing hosting the Olympics and stating that the U.S. will not send officials to the Beijing Olympics if the Chinese Communist Party continues to suppress freedom of religion.
