Japan’s NHK reports that preliminary data from Tokyo on the 22nd at 3 p.m. local time shows that 861 confirmed cases of New Coronary Pneumonia (CCP virus) were added in a single day, a new high since the second emergency declaration was lifted, and the second consecutive day with more than 800 confirmed cases.
Tokyo is currently implementing “priority measures to prevent the spread of the disease,” but the outbreak seems to be heating up. The Japanese government is considering issuing a third emergency declaration on the 23rd for Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto prefectures. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) believes that this is an epidemic prevention measure for Japan and will not affect the summer hosting of the Tokyo Olympics.
