After the conclusion of the first U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on March 21 that the U.S. and Taiwan are strong partners in defending freedom, advancing economic connectivity, and promoting shared democratic values, and that the economic dialogue will further strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan economic relationship.
The first “U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue” was held on the 20th of May, organized by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, but the U.S. side was led by State Department Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment Keith Krach, and U.S. State Department Assistant Secretary for Asia and the Pacific David Stilwell also participated.
The Central News Agency reports that in addition to signing a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to institutionalize the economic dialogue, the two sides also agreed to initiate consultations on a “Science and Technology Agreement” to strengthen U.S.-Taiwan scientific cooperation.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is still visiting the Middle East, and he tweeted on the morning of the 21st that the U.S. and Taiwan are strong partners in defending freedom, advancing economic ties, and promoting shared democratic values. Pompeo emphasized that the U.S.-Taiwan dialogue will further strengthen our economic ties.
The U.S. State Department expressed optimism on the evening of the 20th that the economic dialogue offers both sides an opportunity to advance existing areas of economic cooperation while building new economic ties, and that future dialogues will help strengthen the bilateral economic relationship and further enhance the U.S.-Taiwan community’s respect for democracy, as well as strengthen both sides’ commitment to free markets, entrepreneurship, and freedom.
