More than a million Americans have begun air travel for Thanksgiving, with travel numbers expected to reach into the millions before Thanksgiving.
Millions of Americans are expected to travel by car or plane ahead of the upcoming Thanksgiving Day despite warnings of a new coronavirus outbreak, with more than a million people traveling by air on Friday (Nov. 20) alone, Reuters said. Meanwhile, the number of new coronavirus infections in the United States approached 12 million on Saturday.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA), more than one million Americans traveled by air Friday, second only to the most intensive single-day record for domestic air travel since the outbreak began.
TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein tweeted on Saturday that “this is the second time since the outbreak that passenger traffic has surpassed one million people.”
Reuters said there were 196,815 new cases of new coronavirus infections on Friday, a new high. Health officials warn that the new coronavirus infection could quickly overwhelm the U.S. health care system if people don’t follow public health directives, especially those related to not traveling or holding traditional Thanksgiving celebrations with other families.
While the number of people traveling by air on Thanksgiving is expected to be nearly half of what it was in 2019, 2.4 million people are still expected to travel by air before Thanksgiving, while the number of people traveling by car is only expected to drop by about 4 percent, Reuters said.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has issued a “strong recommendation” for Americans to avoid traveling by all modes of transportation around Thanksgiving.
