Former Premier Wen Jiabao wrote four articles in the Macau Herald before this year’s Ching Ming Festival, paying tribute to his mother, who passed away last December, recalling how her “strong, self-reliant and upwardly mobile” mother had influenced his life, the fourth of which talked about his family sentiments, saying, “The China I have in mind should be A country full of fairness and justice, where there is always respect for the human heart, humanity and human nature, where there is always youth, freedom and struggle. I have shouted and fought for this”. The article was once widely circulated on the Internet in China, but now it is said to be a banned article. If this is the case, even the former prime minister has been silenced, so how can a grassroots person have a voice? This also shows how sensitive the domestic political situation is today.
Why was Wen Jiabao’s article published in a free weekly newspaper distributed in Macau, rather than in the official party media? Obviously, Wen and other CCP patriarchs have to abide by the Party’s propaganda discipline, and it would be difficult for them to make public appearances and speak out freely in China without the approval of the Central Committee and even Xi Jinping. If they want to be in the press, so that the domestic public can hear their different voices and read their non-propaganda articles, the only way is to export to domestic sales. This has nothing to do with the sensitivity of the content, but because of their identity, but of course, Wen Jiabao’s article has both.
Wen says that after he became the first premier in November 2003, his mother wrote to him instructing him, “How hard it is for you to be in such a high position as a minister today without any backers, let alone at home. Your character is to strive for perfection, but the country is so big, the population is so large, it is difficult to achieve perfection …… to be on the pass, to have people and, always remember that a lone tree can hardly become a forest.” By the time he was certain of his re-election in October 2007, his mother wrote to him again, saying, “The achievements of the past five years have been hard-won and earned by you with your heart and blood. The next five years will be difficult and complicated to continue to maintain, how easy …… so many things, how wide your shoulders alone can withstand? This will require everyone in the same boat, smooth and stable through the five years of difficulties.” These two letters, both telling the same proposition, is to cooperate with others, in the same boat to achieve great things.
Such a truth, without Mrs. Wen said out, Wen Jiabao know very well, even any workplace people understand this truth. Now spoken by Wen Jiabao, naturally people have infinite association. He is a political figure, every word and deed is given political significance, and he has been in Zhongnanhai for 28 years, the official premier, these words are interpreted as the way of government, even warm tips for today’s leaders, it is not too much. In short, the way to govern is to have access to the top and to the people and to be in the same boat, and those in power today seem to have failed to meet these requirements.
In addition, Wen Jiabao boasts in the article that he has no backstage backers, and is not a second-generation official because of the background of the second generation of the red to ascend to the position of the hall, but with real talent, political performance to gain recognition within the party, before being entrusted with important responsibilities. This comment is also easy to be reminded that a decade or two ago, the CPC Central Committee still had this kind of hiring and tolerance for people, but nowadays, it only seeks loyalty, absolute loyalty to the party and the leader to get to the top, whether the moral and talent is qualified is not a consideration, the two are really a world apart.
Not in line with the main theme of the party celebration
However, the most sensitive text also attracted the most discussion and repercussions or the words of sentiment. Wen Jiabao said: “I sympathize with the poor and the weak, and oppose bullying and oppression. The China I have in mind should be a country full of fairness and justice, where there is always respect for the human heart, humanity and the essence of human beings, and where there is always the temperament of youth, freedom and struggle. I have cried out and fought for this.” These are of course unsuitable words, but they are a confession for himself, a statement of his heart, a clarification that he has fought for justice and freedom in China, and cried out for the poor and the weak. Wen Jiabao also said in his article that his mother sympathized with the poor and lived a simple and clean life to strengthen his persuasive power.
Wen Jiabao is an anomaly in the Communist Party after Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang, and has indeed spoken publicly about his desire for democracy and freedom. As the centennial of the Party is in full swing, the main theme is to praise the Party’s great achievements and Xi Jinping’s great work in the new era, and what’s more, in recent years, the Chinese Communist Party has regarded freedom as a taboo and has become a forbidden word. It is easy to think that today’s China is not a fair and just country.
Perhaps he is not trying to challenge anyone, let alone stir up trouble, but in the new age of being on the line at every turn, there is no guarantee that things won’t go wrong. Jack Ma’s remarks mocking China’s outdated financial regulatory system can also make his Ant listing, turning him into his own ant, and even rumors that he should quit Ant net (give up his stake in Ant), and will Wen Jiabao’s words make him pay a huge price?
