Fu Guohao, a reporter for the Chinese Communist Party’s mouthpiece Global Times, was hailed as a “hero” by the official media and received a 100,000 yuan bonus after he was attacked at the airport during the 2019 anti-sending campaign in Hong Kong. But his father announced on Weibo that Fu Guohao had left the newspaper because he could not find a place to live in Beijing.
Fu Chengxue, a retired soldier, said on his Weibo account that his son had been with the newspaper for almost three years and “worked very well with Hu (editor-in-chief) and his colleagues in the newspaper”. With his current income and financial situation, it is difficult for him to have a place of his own in Beijing”, and his elderly parents “can’t allow this only son to drift around in Beijing”, so he decided to leave Beijing and Huan Shi.
The post ended with the words, “8.13.2019 has become history, Huan Shi has become the past, but his goal will not be lost, his steps are still solid!”
Some netizens questioned whether this was a disguised attempt to “ask for housing” from the authorities, saying sarcastically, “He didn’t succumb to the Hong Kong riot, but fell in front of the Beijing hukou and housing ……” “In Beijing at the age of 30 by themselves to buy a house? On what basis? Work less than eight years, you want to earn a set of Beijing housing money, ten years ago are not easy, now more impossible.”
Some people also asked why it was the father’s voice, “A father sent this very strange? The son has no voice? Where are you going? What kind of work do you do? How badly was “Ring Time” treated? How did the others survive? So confused ah!”

Others mocked him for being unloaded. A large number of protesters rally at the Hong Kong airport in August 2019 in response to a call from the anti-China campaign “Fly with You. Fu Guohao went to the scene to photograph the protesters at close range and told the protesters, “I support the Hong Kong police, you can beat me up.”
During the protest, the protesters were suspicious of Fu’s identity as a journalist and asked him to show his press card. Fu tried to escape, but was caught and tied to a luggage cart with plastic zipper ties, beaten, and had all his belongings taken away.
After the incident, Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times, said on Weibo that Fu Guohao was employed by its Global Network, and that he did not have a press card because it takes a long time to get a press card in mainland China, and many frontline media workers do not have a press card.
His ID and address in Beijing is a collective dormitory belonging to the Ministry of State Security’s Fourth Bureau on Wanshou Road; he has a bank account under two names; and while working for Globe, he also works for a company called Beijing Shihua Wanxiang Information, a company that provides information for the Communist Party’s overseas foreign propaganda.
In the case of Fu Guohao’s war at the Hong Kong airport, the Chinese Communist Party and the media have led civil opinion to launch a siege against the Hong Kong public. The People’s Daily published a commentary saying, “Where is the freedom of the press? Where is the rule of law?” And so on.
The two men accused of assaulting Fu Guohao, Lai Yunlong and He Jiajia, and the woman accused, Bi Huifen, were convicted in January of rioting and assault and battery and sentenced to five years and three months, five and a half years and four years and three months, respectively.
