The winners of the Hong Kong Golden Yao Yu Press Freedom Awards were announced on Wednesday (21), with the grand prizes going to “7.21 Who Owns the Truth” and “Police Force Unauthorized Building Series”, which reported on police scandals in Hong Kong. Radio Television Hong Kong, the producer of “7.21 Who Owns the Truth”, which was involved in the anti-China campaign, refused to accept the award.
In order to maintain the freedom of the press in Hong Kong as the purpose of the Golden Yao Yu Press Freedom Award 21 announced this year’s list of winners, by RTHK clang set “7.21 Who is the master of the truth” and the “Apple Daily” of the “police force illegal construction series of reports” won, two works are used to investigate the book as a tool.
The “7.21 Who Owns the Truth” was produced by Yvonne Choi, Cecilia Cheng, Yvonne Yeung and Eunice Chan in the form of outsourcing. According to the award organizers, “7.21 Who Owns the Truth” was selected among 19 entries in the “Radio and TV Category”, and it not only received the highest average rating, but also the highest single score among all judges.
One of the judges, Associate Professor Fu King-wah of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre of the University of Hong Kong, said that the production team of “Who Owns the Truth about 7.21”, one year after the 7.21 incident and when the public still has many doubts about the cause of the incident, has carefully and professionally researched and reviewed the original CCTV information and interviewed key figures to give their own accounts. The award is well-deserved, both in terms of professionalism and public interest.
As for the “Online Media” category, the award went to Apple Daily’s “Police Force Unauthorized Building Series”. The award-winning series of reports was published by Apple’s investigation team, starting with a book search, supplemented by field observations and evidence, and giving the parties concerned full rights to respond.
As one of the judges, Professor Lee Siu Nam from the School of Communication of Hang Seng University pointed out that the courage to expose inappropriate matters done by the powerful and to conduct in-depth investigation based on facts is an important criterion in judging the entries of the Press Freedom Award, and the “Police Force Unauthorized Building Series” can promote social progress by exposing inappropriate acts in defiance of the powerful, which has a progressive meaning to the society, and therefore can take the lead among 46 entries.
However, the “7.21 who main truth” choreographer Choi Yuk-ling, last year was accused in the production of the program, “with false statements” for the vehicle search book, she denied the charge earlier, the case Thursday (22) ruling. And earlier ordered to prohibit the entry of works of Radio Television Hong Kong said it would not receive the award.
