Chinese Civilian “Rose Team” Member Xu Kun Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for “Provocation and Disorder”

According to a news release from the Chinese civil rights organization Minsheng Watch, the family of Kunming, Yunnan human rights activist Xu Kun received a court verdict from his lawyer, and learned that Xu Kun had been sentenced to two years in prison by the authorities for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.

According to the court, Xu Kun was a member of the “Rose Team”, a Chinese civil society group. “Qin Yongmin, the founder of the Rose Team and a well-known pro-democracy activist, was sentenced to 13 years in prison by the authorities and is now being held in Guanghua Prison in Qianjiang, Hubei Province. Xu Kun has long established QQ groups on the Internet and has been a speaker on human rights and democratic transformation, and has repeatedly supported arrested human rights defenders online and participated in solidarity activities for Qin Yongmin’s trial.

“Minsheng Watch condemned the Yunnan Kunming authorities for retaliating against Xu Kun and imprisoning him for his online comments. It is reported that it has been nearly two years since Xu Kun was arrested on August 17, 2019, and the authorities have overstayed his detention without holding a trial, in serious violation of relevant legal procedures.

The case was sentenced on April 8 this year by a court in Kunming, Yunnan Province; lawyers received the court verdict only on April 19, the report said.
