Two Tibetans from Machin County in Qinghai’s Golok Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture have been arrested by authorities for using WeChat to communicate with the outside world, according to sources cited by Tibet Voice on April 21. The two are currently being held at the Machin County Public Security Bureau.
The source said that the Chinese Communist Party authorities are now strictly controlling Tibetans with relatives living abroad in Tibet, often forcing them to go to meetings with local village committees and asking them not only to self-censor, but also to monitor each other or report any suspicious activities, and to give monetary rewards and assistance to those who report.
It is reported that two Tibetans, Sangdan Sangpo and Tsering, from Machin County, Golog, Tibet, were arrested by police on April 16 for using WeChat to communicate with the outside world. Due to a news embargo, it is not possible to obtain any specifics at this time.
The sources also disclosed that the Chinese Communist Party authorities are stepping up their efforts to control the Internet and WeChat in the Tibetan region, mainly in Lhasa, and have arrested many Tibetans in the name of “eliminating evil” and “cracking down on illegality and chaos.
