In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern about Beijing’s increasingly aggressive behavior toward Taiwan and the heightened situation in the Taiwan Strait.
Blinken said the United States has a longstanding commitment to ensuring Taiwan’s ability to defend itself and maintain peace and security in the Western Pacific in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act. He shouted to the Chinese Communist Party, “Anyone who tries to change the status quo by force will make a grave mistake.”
The Republic of China’s Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-sup said on the 8th in the Legislative Yuan before attending the report of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and preparing for questioning that the current tension in the Taiwan Strait has lasted for some time, and the government’s responsibility is that it must continue to observe the enemy threat, and I believe the Ministry of National Defense is doing a very good job, and more importantly, the nation must have the determination to defend their country.
In addition, Wu Chiu-Sup told foreign media reporters on the 7th that the United States is concerned about the risk of conflict in the Taiwan Strait. “Based on my limited understanding of U.S. policymakers who are concerned about developments in the region, they clearly see the danger of a possible Chinese (Communist Party of China) attack on Taiwan.” He said, “There is no question that we are willing to defend ourselves. If there is a need to fight a war, we will fight a war. If there is a need to defend ourselves to the last day, we will defend ourselves to the last day.”
Wu also said Taiwan is determined to improve its military capabilities and increase more defense spending. “It is our own responsibility to defend Taiwan. If we are not willing to defend ourselves, we have no right to ask other countries to make sacrifices for Taiwan. Therefore, we defend our own defense in a very serious manner.”
Republic of China President Tsai Ing-wen received a visiting delegation of former U.S. Senator Todd at the presidential palace on April 15, saying that the Chinese Communist Party frequently sends warships and military aircraft to conduct military activities in the surrounding sea and airspace; Taiwan is willing to work with like-minded countries, including the United States, to guard the stability and peace of the Indo-Pacific region.
