As time passes, the battery performance of a smartphone decreases. Any cell phone user would like to keep their phone battery performance in good condition for a longer period of time. What confuses many people is whether overnight charging will hurt their phone battery.
What manufacturers say
Battery life is not only determined by the length of time it is used. There are many other factors, including extreme temperature fluctuations and the charging habits of users.
In terms of time of use, the lithium-ion battery in your phone will chemically age over time and only hold less power. That’s why your old phone won’t hold an effective charge for very long.
So, does overnight charging have any effect on the battery?
Apple says that when your iPhone is “fully charged for an extended period of time, battery health may be compromised”.
Android phone makers, including Samsung, have the same opinion.
Phone makers believe that keeping the battery as close to the middle of the pack (30 to 70 percent) as possible can effectively extend battery life. This means keeping your phone fully charged, but not fully charged.
The battery will automatically stop charging when it’s full, but in some cases, once the charge drops to 99%, it will need more charge to get back to 100%. This continuous cycle can drain the life of the battery. For this reason, most phones come with a charge regulation option.
Use the phone’s built-in features
On iPhones running iOS 13 and later, Optimized Battery Charging reduces the time it takes to fully charge your phone. When enabled, iPhone will analyze your charging habits and wait until you need to continue charging when the battery reaches 80%.
This feature is turned on by default, but you can also check if it is turned on again by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging.
No matter which phone you use, make full use of its battery life feature. Start by looking at the “Battery” section in Settings and then check the available options. The less daily wear and tear, the longer your battery will last in the long run.
Apps like Android’s AccuBattery can also help users keep an eye on battery health. This screen shows when to charge and when to pull out in real time to maximize battery life.
More ways to keep your battery healthy
There’s no need to reduce the battery to 0 before charging. letting your phone’s battery charge from 0% to 100% would exhaust the entire charge cycle. Charge at a convenient time and don’t worry about the percentage.
Keep your phone in as cool an environment as possible. Overheating can affect battery life in the long run, so tucking your phone under your pillow is a bad habit. Leaving your phone in the sun or outside on cold days is also a bad habit.
If you have to charge overnight, when waking up in the night and finding your phone fully charged, unplug it. It won’t make much of a difference, but it certainly won’t do any harm.
