Tesla crashed into a tree and burnt to a crisp.
A “driverless” Tesla electric car crashed into a tree and caught fire late Saturday night in Houston-Texas, killing two people.
Harris County Sheriff Mark Herman said the 2019 Model S crashed into a gyratory at high speed when it lost control, with no one in the driver’s seat, one in the front seat passenger seat and one in the back seat at the time of the accident.
The owner’s brother-in-law said the owner said he was driving around with a close friend, so there were only two people in the car at the time of the accident. He suspected that the owner of the car started Autopilot after driving, and then moved to the back seat, but the car traveled a few hundred meters after the accident.
The relatives of the deceased witnessed the car hit a tree and caught fire, burning for four hours to put out, during which the car battery kept re-igniting, the police once had to contact Tesla for advice on how to put out the battery fire, and finally used 32,000 gallons of water to put out the fire.
Authorities will conduct autopsies on the two victims to determine the cause of death.
The New York Times reported last month that Tesla’s Autopilot technology is being closely watched by U.S. authorities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 23 recent accidents in which the drivers involved activated or were suspected to have activated the Autopilot system.
