Young leftist becomes a fighter after 64, terminally ill Gu Siyao sentenced to 5 months in prison, shouting down the Communist Party

Leung Kwok-hung, who is currently imprisoned under the National Security Law, fears that he may not be able to see his sick comrade again when he is released from prison.

Hong Kong social activist Ku Si-yiu, who is in his 70s, was charged with illegal assembly and the verdict was announced on Tuesday (13). He urged the court not to take pity on him, and even made it clear to the judge that he would deliberately violate the National Security Law. The judge sentenced him to five months in prison. After the results were read out, Gu Siyao shouted “Long live democracy!” Leung Kwok-hung, a good friend of “Long Hair”, is being remanded in custody on charges under the National Security Law and is facing a heavy sentence. The defendant Gu Siyao was charged with “knowingly participating in an unauthorized assembly”. Magistrate Deng Shaoxiong sentenced him to five months in prison, but Gu Siyao pleaded not guilty to the charge. After the verdict, Gu Siyao shouted “Long live democracy! Long live human rights!” A member of the public shouted, “Hang in there, Ah Ku!”

Another defendant in the same case, Wong Chi-fung, was sentenced to four months in prison on the first charge of “knowingly participating in an unauthorized assembly. The second charge, “using masked objects in an unauthorized assembly,” was sentenced to 10 days in prison, to be served concurrently.

Gu Siyao: Being in prison is part of my life

After the verdict was announced, Judge Deng asked Ku Siyao if he had anything to say, and he said, “Sitting in jail is part of my life, and the more I fail, the smarter I get.” During the plea session, Gu Siyao then said that he had participated in the democracy movement for more than 30 years, and that this imprisonment would be the 11th time, “there will be the 12th and 13th time, and next time I will deliberately violate the National Security Law, but I hope the court will not pity me, do not sympathize with me, do not be merciful to me.”

At one point in his speech he was interrupted by the magistrate, saying, “Waiting for the formation, I understand everything, but now it’s a plea for mercy.” But Gu Siyao continued to speak, stating, “Human rights are greater than the regime, the people are above the state, end one-party dictatorship, and bring down the Communist Party!” Some onlookers applauded. He was willing to cooperate with the ruling of the Eastern Magistrates’ Court, and with the arrangements made by the Commissioner of Correctional Services.

He is not worried about his imprisonment, only his condition.

He said he was a tough guy, and that he and Leung Kwok Hung and the late Ng Kung Siu were the pioneers of the social movement in Hong Kong, and had brought civil disobedience to the forefront. He pointed out that Koo seems to be brash, but in the court of law, the courage is worthy of respect. People are not worried about his imprisonment, only about his condition.

Wong Ho Ming said: honestly, he has this disease, with him together for the democratic struggle of people are not happy. We are very worried about his health, especially the long hair (Leung Kwok Hung), he repeatedly asked about the situation of Gu Siyao. He (Gu) April 7 (on the case of insulting the national flag) released from prison, we are as soon as possible the next day, April 8 to take him to Lai Chi Kok scabbard to visit the long hair, hoping to wait for them to see the next, because long hair all day long are very worried, because long hair expected himself a short time will not come out, but this time Gu has a terminal illness, so he is worried that when he has freedom, Gu is no longer in, so they have made a special visit. I saw them all happy during the clearing.
