U.S., German Defense Ministers Hold April 13 Press Conference
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin announced Tuesday (April 13) that, in consultation with German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the United States will deploy an additional 500 troops in Germany by the fall.
“This planned increase in U.S. military personnel underscores our commitment to Germany and the entire NATO alliance.” Austin said in a speech at the German Defense Ministry.
The move reverses the policy of the previous U.S. administration, which wanted to significantly reduce the number of U.S. troops in Germany. When Biden took office, he had announced a policy of freezing the withdrawal of troops from Germany.
“It’s great news that (the U.S.) has not only stopped withdrawing troops from Germany, but, on the contrary, we will be able to welcome another 500 U.S. troops.” German Defense Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer said.
“Germany is one of our strongest allies, and our relationship is built on the shared values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.” U.S. Defense Secretary Austin said, “Today, these principles are increasingly under duress. In a dynamically changing and challenging global security environment, Germany will continue to be an important security and economic partner for the United States in the future.”
Officials accompanying him said Austin’s visit to Germany demonstrates the importance the Biden administration places on the relationship between the two countries.
“Strengthening our relationship with Germany is a top priority for the Biden-Heinrich administration,” Austin said, “and emphasizing our strong commitment to our allies and partners is at the top of my agenda, which includes advancing our transatlantic partnership and strengthening cooperation with our NATO allies. “
Austin added that the 500 additional U.S. troops will augment the existing capabilities of U.S. forces in Germany, will help in the space and cyber domains, and provide additional electronic warfare capabilities in Europe, as well as improve the ability to defend allies.
Germany is the first European country Austin visited on the trip.
