Another African-American shot by police at same site as Floyd case, Biden says

Hundreds of people came to Minneapolis on April 11 to demonstrate near the site of another police shooting of a black man. Last May, not far from here, African-American man Floyd was crushed to death by white police officers.

The Minnesota State Police said on December 12 that the policewoman who shot and killed an African-American man in a Minneapolis suburb yesterday mistook a handgun for a stun gun. President Biden warned that there was no reason to launch violent protests as a result.

Speaking at a press conference about the shooting of African-American man Daunte Wright yesterday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said, “The officer pulled a handgun and not a stun gun.”

Gannon said, “I can’t say anything to ease the pain of Wright’s family after the accidental firing of the bullet that caused Wright’s tragic death.” The incident has added to local tensions over the opening of the trial of another African-American man, Floyd, who was crushed to death by police officers.

Biden said today that he has spoken with Minnesota authorities about the shooting of the 20-year-old African-American man and that it is “a tragedy, but I think we have to wait until the results of the investigation are known.

In the meantime, I want to make it clear again that there is absolutely no reason for this robbery,” he said. It would make sense to hold a peaceful protest,” he said, adding that federal resources have been sent to the area where the incident occurred and are available to maintain calm.
