According to Californian News, the former Japanese internment camp, now a parking lot at the Pomona Fairplex in Los Angeles County, is being used as a camp for unaccompanied immigrant children, the third of its kind in California! This comes on the heels of Long Beach and San Diego both pledging to convert their convention centers into temporary shelters for immigrant children.
The decision was made after discussions with the Biden White House, said Hilda Solis, president of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The Biden administration has reached out to communities across the country to find space for undocumented children housed in Border Patrol facilities. The Biden administration even urged NASA employees to travel to the border and volunteer at overcrowded camps, but without success.
In 1942, a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt authorized the internment of Japanese-Americans for fear of their allegiance to the Japanese emperor, and Pomona was chosen as one of the sites for the camps. At the time, the Pomona internment camp had 309 barracks, eight mess halls, 36 showers and toilet facilities, and at its peak, housed more than 5,000 people. In recent months, it used to be one of several large Communist vaccination sites in Los Angeles County.
