Turkey hopes for peaceful resolution of crisis in eastern Ukraine

The Turkish government hopes that tensions in eastern Ukraine will come to a halt and be resolved peacefully through dialogue, and says it is ready to provide the necessary support to that end.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held more than three hours of talks with visiting Ukrainian President Dzerensky in Istanbul on Saturday to discuss tensions between Ukraine and Russia over the conflict in the Donbass region.

After the talks, Erdogan expressed hope that the “disturbing” tensions in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine would come to a halt, saying Turkey is ready to provide the necessary support to that end.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Zelensky, Erdogan expressed hope that the conflict in eastern Ukraine could be resolved peacefully through dialogue. “We hope that the recent disturbing escalation of regional tensions will end as soon as possible, that the ceasefire will continue and that this conflict will be resolved through dialogue on the basis of the Minsk agreements,” he said, adding that “we are ready to provide any necessary support for this. “

We discussed at length the topic of security and joint resistance to the challenges of the Black Sea region,” Zelensky said. It is worth pointing out that the Ukrainian and Turkish governments share the same opinion about the threats themselves and the way to react to them.”

In a phone conversation with President Erdogan on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of “dangerous and provocative actions” in the Donbas region. The Ukrainian government said Saturday that Ukraine could be provoked by Russia’s efforts to increase tensions in the Donbass.

The Turkish government said Friday that the U.S. government will send two warships into the Black Sea next week.
