China blocks UN condemnation of military coup Burma protesters burn Chinese flag

At last week’s UN Security Council meeting, China, a permanent member, used its influence to avoid the word “military coup” in Myanmar in the Council’s statement. In response, demonstrators in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, burned Chinese flags on April 5 in a show of discontent.

So far, the UN Security Council has issued two statements expressing concern and condemning the forceful crackdown on protesters, but all have avoided the term “military coup. China is working with “all political parties” in Myanmar to reduce tensions, Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the UN, said at the meeting.

Demonstrators in Myanmar are demanding that Aung San Suu Kyi’s government remain in power and are stringing together a major non-cooperation movement across the country. Countries in the region are prepared to coordinate on the crisis.
