The appearance of “Gunsmoke” not only won Du the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, but also established his unique style of film, the excellence of this film has no doubt. Although Johnnie To does not recognize Exile as a sequel to Gunsmoke, and there is no direct relationship between the two films in terms of storyline or characters, Exile and Gunsmoke are not directly related.
The first time I saw it, I thought it was a good idea for me to have a movie that I was going to make for myself, but I didn’t think it would be a good idea for me to have a movie that I was going to make for myself.
A ton of gold can’t crush the shoulders of a real man.
A-Ho (Zhang Jiahui), A-Fire (Huang Qiusheng), A-Bo (Lin Xue), Tai (Wu Zhenyu) and Cat (Zhang Yaoyang) are brothers who were once as close as brothers.
They meet at A-Ho’s house, and after a brief battle they quickly return to peace. After discussing the matter, they decide to make a big deal together for the sake of Ah Wo’s wife and children. The mission is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Dafei, and after a fierce battle, their plan to assassinate Egg Roll Keung fails and they have no choice but to rob the ton of gold. In order to save A-Ho’s wife and son, they are willing to give up a ton of gold and fight Fei to the death.
Sisterhood of Gunfire
It is said that Gunsmoke is better than Exile, and some say that Exile is a copy of Gunsmoke. It is true that “Exile” inherited many of the essence of “Gunsmoke”, such as the Dragon style of speech, similar to the chivalrous chivalrous action, with similarities and similarities.
It is clear that “Gunfire” was an experiment in old Dou’s romantic gunplay, while “Exile” is an advancement, but in terms of the color palette of the film, “Gunfire” uses a dark, deep, cool color palette that better highlights the characters. The color palette of “Exile”, on the other hand, has a strong western style, as if the whole shot is filled with yellow sand, which some people call “contemporary western”.
Exile is a blaze of fire, a jar of old spirits and strong liquor. When watching Gunsmoke, you may be depressed until the very end, but with Exile, you may have to take a second to breathe a sigh of relief.
A romance about men
Someone once asked me what this movie was about. I said, “It’s about a man’s romance.
A lot of girls are bored with these “shoot-em-ups”. They don’t understand the inexplicable camaraderie of the men in the film, and the inexplicable passion and impulsiveness of the men. Words like “stabbing at the ribs” and “righteousness” basically belonged only to men.
In their dictionary, emotion is something heavier than a ton of gold. A ton of gold, you can live your life freely, if you sacrifice gold and die, it’s a big loss. But a true man, in the end, has to leave everything behind because of “loyalty”. So we can point out all the shortcomings of Exile: the repetitive filming, the artificiality of the rituals, and even the fact that the plot doesn’t make sense, but it’s not my problem either. But it does move you, touched by the scalding blood of men.
The so-called brotherhood is nothing more than a meteoric bloom, and then exile to the ends of the earth.
An elegy for the times
In this age of overpowering gloom and doom, the age of the nation’s fresh meat. Films like “Exile” are no longer in vogue, and the mild-mannered, sane, intelligent civilized man has become the contemporary standard. Men are more like women, while women act more like men. Men in the modern world are no longer on the road to sophistication, so I’m not used to the gang of brown men in Exile, a bunch of silly old men who aren’t clean enough or smart enough to take a ton of gold. Their way of thinking is so neurotic that one minute they’re fighting each other to the death, the next they’re throwing a bottle of wine around and sharing it with each other, and they’re clumsily moving furniture together. They do what their hearts tell them to do, happily walk to their death, and insist on putting on their sunglasses when they are about to die.
There is already gunfire, but still exile is needed.
