U.S. media: International Health Building Association leadership’s dubious ties to China’s Communist Party

The National Archives reports that the founders and leadership team of the International Association for Healthy Buildings have extensive ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

The International Association for Healthy Buildings claims to be leading a global movement to transform our buildings and communities in ways that help human development.

The founder and leadership team of the International Healthy Building Association, according to the report, has extensive ties to mainland China and various Chinese companies.

Recently, when Americans turned on their TVs to see celebrities such as Miss Gaga, Robert De Niro, Michael B. Jordan and Jennifer Lopez on commercials urging U.S. companies to earn the International WELL Health and Safety Seal,” they urged U.S. companies to obtain the “WELL Health and Safety Seal” from the International WELL Health Building Institute, and they were surprised.

Every celebrity says, “Look for the International Healthy Building Institute to confirm safety.

Paul Scialla, former Goldman Sachs partner and founder of Delos, the $800 million parent company of the International Healthy Building Institute, appears in the video and claims the safety rating is based on “years of research and input” from leading epidemiologists, virologists, health professionals and public health experts.

In order for a building to receive “health and safety recognition,” it must meet strict criteria related to “disinfection procedures, emergency preparedness plans, air and water quality, and health service resources.” In addition, companies must pay thousands of dollars (depending on building size and revenue) to receive the rating.

One person missing from the video is Xue Ya, president of the International Healthy Building Association for Asia. According to her bio on the IHBA website, Xue Ya is “a recognized business leader in promoting U.S.-China collaboration and a driving force for sustainable human health through the built environment in Asia” with “extensive experience in real estate development, sustainable development, international investment, U.S.-China business and cultural exchange, and government relations.” She also founded Fusion Management Group to help “Chinese companies go global, enabling Chinese companies and executives to significantly grow their businesses in the United States, often bringing Chinese investment and technology to the United States.”

The video itself has raised eyebrows, but perhaps most concerning is the dubious connection between the leadership of the International Health Building Association and the Chinese Communist Party. According to Business Wire, in 2016, Paul Shara and Shea met with Li Ming, chairman of Chinese real estate company Sino-Ocean, who later joined the Delos Advisory Board “to provide strategic advice and recommendations to help guide the development of healthy building in China.”

Paul Shera said, “Sino-Ocean is one of the largest developers in China and is admired throughout the industry for its forward-thinking development philosophy” and “their commitment to pursue IHBA certification for 25 million square feet of construction will be a landmark step in IHBA’s expansion in China.”

Li Ming, 57, has served on the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and is a member of the Chaoyang District People’s Congress in Beijing, according to Bloomberg.

Publicly available information shows that Li Ming is an honorary vice president of the China Real Estate Association, a British royal chartered builder and senior engineer, and an expert on the U.S. Global Health Building Standards Board. Li Ming is currently a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a member of the 10th Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a member of the 11th Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and a member of the Beijing Representative of the 13th, 14th and 15th People’s Congress of Chaoyang District.

According to Dr. Richard H. Carmona, former U.S. medical director, the International Association for Healthy Buildings claims to be “the global authority on healthy buildings.

However, it appears that some Americans do not believe the assurances of former Wall Street power players and celebrities such as Lady Gaga, and have taken to the Internet to question the validity of the IHBA’s health and safety affirmations.
