North Korea announces it will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics Four-way dialogue threatens to fall through

North Korea announced that it will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics this year.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said recently that the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in July might be an opportunity for the two Koreas, Japan and the U.S. to open a four-way dialogue, but North Korea fired the first shot today (6), announcing its decision not to participate in the Tokyo Olympics this year in view of the epidemic.

According to Yonhap News Agency, “North Korea Sports Network” released a news release today saying that it decided not to participate in the Tokyo Olympics in July this year, considering the situation of the virus epidemic in China. The DPRK Olympic Committee held a meeting at the end of last month and decided not to participate in the Eastern Olympics to protect athletes from the threat of the Chinese Communist virus.

According to the report, the DPRK Olympic Committee said that although it will not participate in this year’s Olympic Games, it stressed that it will continue to increase the number of medals in international sporting events in the next five years to create a national sports boom.

The New York Times analyzed that North Korea’s move cut off a rare opportunity for dialogue with South Korea or other countries, and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics saw North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sibling Kim and Jung become the first member of the family to enter South Korea to participate in the Olympic opening ceremony, which also sparked global attention at the time. Since then the two Koreas have been actively engaged in dialogue, and Kim Jong-un has also held several meetings with Moon Jae-in and former U.S. President Donald Trump, although North Korea has been avoiding formal contact with South Korea and the U.S. since diplomatic relations between North Korea and the U.S. deteriorated in 2019, and previous U.S.-Japan and U.S.-South Korea meetings have led to questions that may be related to North Korea’s sudden decision to withdraw from the East Olympics.
