Putin signed a decree allowing two terms of office and is expected to hold power until 2036

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s presidency is set to expire in 2024, but a document published on the country’s government website on Monday (5) showed that Putin has signed a law allowing him to serve two more terms, paving the way for power until 2036.

According to the legislation, Putin will be able to hold power until 2036 if he decides to run for president and is successful in his re-election. Russia’s presidential term is six years, but a constitutional amendment passed by parliament and a referendum on constitutional amendments last year is designed to allow Putin to re-calculate his presidential term after it expires in 2024, allowing him to run for president again.
