According to U.S. media reports, a wastewater pond containing radioactive effluent in Manatee County, Florida, is leaking badly, and Governor Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency yesterday (3) and evacuated about 316 local residents. (2.4 billion liters) of wastewater will leak out into Tampa Bay, causing a serious environmental disaster.

Manatee County Public Safety Director Jacob Saur said field engineers believe the dangerous situation is escalating and the wastewater pond could collapse structurally at any time; Administrator Scott Hopes noted that if the levee completely collapses, a large amount of wastewater would rush out within minutes or even seconds, flooding the neighborhood and flowing into the bay, endangering the ecosystem. The governor of Florida has also expressed concern about the adjacent dams.

Florida’s governor also issued emergency orders for neighboring Hillsborough and Pinellas counties and began transporting pumps, cranes and other heavy equipment that could be needed if the wastewater pond collapses.
