Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a news conference Monday (March 29) that he will soon take urgent government action against the idea and practice of requiring Americans to have a “vaccine passport” in order to engage in social activities.
“We don’t support that. I think people have a certain amount of freedom and personal liberty to make their own decisions.” DeSantis said.
“It’s totally unacceptable for either the government or the private sector to require you to show proof of vaccines just to be able to participate in social (activities) properly.”
DeSantis said people are not required to show proof of vaccination against the CCP virus (Wuhan virus, New Coronavirus) when they attend races, go to movies, go to theme parks or other social events.
“Do you want the foxes to guard the henhouse?” He said, “I understand, to some extent, how people have embraced this idea, and I’m not saying it’s all being done for bad purposes, but I think ultimately this is going to cause problems in the state.”
He also urged the state Legislature to take more permanent action.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters in Washington, D.C., on Monday that the Biden administration would “provide guidance” on private-sector efforts to develop “vaccine passports” and similar systems.
Earlier this month, DeSantis had already voiced his opposition to the idea, saying it “would not be on the table at all.
“The vaccine passport is a bad idea. From a state perspective, we would never ask for anything.” It’s a complete non-starter,” DeSantis told reporters on March 18. If a business wants to do that in Florida, I don’t think that’s just a private decision.”
Former Clinton adviser Naomi Wolf told Fox News on Sunday that a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine passport “would end human freedom in the West, if the program goes ahead as planned.
Last week, DeSantis criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for announcing a no sail order for cruise ships until Nov. 1.
On March 26, Florida’s governor discussed the importance of the cruise industry with state officials, calling the CDC’s order “baseless.
During the meeting, DeSantis asked the CDC to rescind the ban on shipping that has been in place since March 14, 2020.
“If we’ve learned one thing in the past year, it’s that blockades don’t work and Floridians deserve the right to make a living,” DeSantis said. “The cruise industry is vital to our state’s economy and to shut it down until November would be disastrous for those who rely on cruise ships to make a living for themselves and their families. I urge the CDC to immediately repeal this baseless ban on sailing to allow Floridians in the industry to get back to work.”
