Biden held his first press conference on the 25th, during which he spoke about his two-hour phone call with Xi Jinping after taking office. Biden said he bluntly warned Xi during the call that if Xi and the Chinese Communist Party continued to violate human rights, the United States would continue to call for worldwide attention and expose it clearly.
In the afternoon of March 25, Biden held his first press conference since taking office at the White House. During the hour-long press conference, he explained his pursuit of Epidemic prevention programs, economic policies, immigration policies and philosophy of governance.
Asked about his relationship with the Chinese Communist Party, he said he does not seek conflict with the Communist Party, but insisted that it abide by international rules.
Biden said that when Xi Jinping called him before this year’s New Year, he made clear to him during a two-hour call that the U.S. president would not stop speaking out on human rights issues such as the Uighurs in Xinjiang and the situation in Hong Kong.
Biden said the United States will stand firm on its values and continue to speak out against the Chinese Communist Party’s violations of freedom and human rights. He said he was outspoken in telling Xi Jinping, “As long as you and your country continue to so flagrantly violate human rights, we will continue to call the world’s attention in an unyielding way and clearly expose what is going on.”
He added that the CCP’s overall goal is “to become the world’s leading country, the richest country in the world and the most powerful country in the world. “I’m not going to criticize them for their goals,” he said, “but it’s not going to happen on my watch because America continues to grow and develop.”
Biden reiterated, “We are competing fiercely with China (Communist Party), but we are going to insist that China (Communist Party) abide by international rules.” “We’re not looking for confrontation, but we understand it’s going to be a tough competition.”
Biden also again referred to his knowledge of Xi Jinping. “I’ve spent more Time with Xi Jinping than any other world leader.” Biden had lengthy exchanges with Xi Jinping, then vice president of the Communist Party of China, during his tenure as vice president, which he described as “deep and detailed” and “frank.
He said of Xi at a press conference, “He doesn’t have a shred of democracy in his bones, but he’s a smart guy. Like Putin, he’s one of those people who believes that autocracy is the wave of the future and that democracy can’t work in an increasingly complex world.”
Biden added that the world now faces “a battle between democracy and dictatorship” and that “we have to prove that democracy works.”
In order to compete strongly with the Chinese Communist Party, Biden believes the United States needs to do three things: first, invest more in American workers and American technology; second, rebuild alliances; and third, the United States will stand by its values and insist on speaking out for human rights in China.
Biden’s defense of Xi Jinping raises questions
During a visit to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Feb. 16, Biden appeared on a CNN-sponsored town hall television program and was also asked about his phone call with Xi Jinping.
Biden said he and Xi spoke about Xinjiang and human rights issues. He said, “We have to speak out for human rights, and that’s the kind of country we are.”
But he went on to say, “I’m not going to object to what he’s doing in Hong Kong, to what he’s doing to the Uighurs in western China, and to Taiwan, trying to force an end to the ‘one-China Policy.’ As I said, by the way, he said he understood. Culturally, every country has different norms that their leaders have to abide by.”
Biden’s comments sparked discussion on social media. Critics argued that Biden meant to say that Xi’s totalitarianism and repression at Home are all about unifying the country and defending it from foreign invaders. This is simply the standard answer given after studying the Chinese Communist Party’s textbooks.
Federal Senator Bill Hagerty questioned, “Why is our president making excuses for the Chinese Communist Party’s looting?” Conservative Tommy Pigott, on the other hand, said, “Why is Biden trying to explain away the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights violations?”
In a subsequent interview with Fox News, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that this rhetoric of just a “different set of norms” is the CCP’s propaganda line, “It wants you to think it’s just a quiet country with a system that may be a little bit different,” but the truth of the matter is The truth of the matter is that they are trying to destroy an entire nation.
Biden and Xi have close ties
Biden, 78, has a lot of experience with the Chinese Communist Party, having served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. The New York Times has quoted former U.S. officials as saying that Biden met with Xi Jinping at least eight times in the United States and China in the 18 months since the beginning of 2011.
Xi and Biden also met together in Los Angeles, ate chocolate together, walked together, shot hoops at a rural Chinese school and dined together privately for more than 25 hours, accompanied only by an interpreter, the newspaper said.
Russell, an adviser who has attended many of their meetings, said Biden and the Communist Party leader have quickly developed a “personal relationship. In the past, Biden has made no secret of his friendship with Xi, and is proud of it.
Speaking at the opening of the U.S.-China Strategic Economic Dialogue in Washington in 2013, Biden said he spent a lot of time with Xi when he was vice president of the Communist Party and had the support of then-leaders Barack Obama and Hu Jintao.
In August 2011, Biden visited Beijing as vice president of the Obama administration, accompanied by Xi Jinping throughout the visit; in February 2012, Xi led a number of governors on a return visit to the United States, accompanied by Biden, and the two ate chocolate together.
During his 2013 visit to China, Biden and Xi were even referred to as “old friends.
In December 2020, when the U.S. presidential election was up in the air, Xi Jinping’s “think tank” Zhai Dongsheng said in a public speech that the Chinese Communist Party had “old friends” in the powerful inner circle of the United States, and that the Chinese Communist Party’s way of dealing with Wall Street was “If one pile of money doesn’t work, two piles of money will.
Zhai Dongsheng also mentioned that after Trump took office, Wall Street couldn’t handle Trump. Zhai then turned the tables and said smugly, “But now Biden is in power!” And he implied that “there’s a deal here. The Chinese Communist Party helped Biden’s son build a global fund and is making political and tactical considerations for Biden’s rise to power.
Biden’s first press conference in more than two months. The press conference broke a 40-year record of delayed press conferences by U.S. presidents.
