President Joe Biden described the U.S.-China relationship in a personal press conference on the 25th: “Despite the very laborious competition between the United States and China… The United States insists that China follow international norms of fair competition, fair behavior and fair trade.”
Biden mentioned that the U.S. will not turn a blind eye to the Chinese Communist Party‘s destruction of human rights, and that the U.S. president will not shut up about what is happening in the Uighurs, in Hong Kong and within China; he said that the U.S. will hold China accountable for compliance with norms, including agreements involving the South China Sea, to Taiwan and even everything else.
Biden described Xi as intelligent but without democracy in his bones; Xi, like Russian President Vladimir Putin, believes that dictatorship is the future trend of the world.
Recalling his first U.S.-China head of state call with Communist Party President Xi Jinping last month, Biden said the two sides were open and honest, and he told Xi that the United States does not seek confrontation despite the very strenuous competition between the United States and China, and secondly, that despite the intense competition, the United States insists that China abide by international norms of fair competition, fair behavior and fair trade.
Third, Biden said the United States will compete effectively with China through three things: investing in American labor and technology, rebuilding alliances and working with democracies to hold China accountable.
Regarding alliances, Biden said, “I made it very clear to Xi Jinping that this is not ‘anti-China’.”
Biden said U.S. values emphasize freedom and human rights, and “as long as you (meaning Xi Jinping) and your country continue to blatantly undermine human rights, we will firmly call the world’s attention to it.”
Biden said there is no U.S. president who does not talk about what is happening to the Uighurs, what is happening in Hong Kong, what is happening in China; as long as someone does that, the U.S. loses its legitimacy around the world.
Biden said it is evident that there is a fierce competition between the U.S. and China, and that China wants to be the world’s leader, the richest and most powerful country, which cannot happen under his rule, and that the U.S. will continue to grow and develop.
