Breitbart News noted that both Biden and Harris, during their campaigns, called on the administration, to mandate a buyback of AR-15s and other commonly used semi-automatic rifles.
Biden made his position on a mandatory buyback of semi-automatic rifles clear during the first Democratic debate of the 2020 election. Biden said at the Time, “Folks, listen, I would buy back assault weapons.”
Breitbart News reported on Sept. 7, 2019, that Harris, then the Democratic presidential nominee, expressed support for an administration-mandated buyback of AR-15s and other common semiautomatic rifles. Bloomberg quoted Harris as saying, “I think it’s a good idea.” while admitting she herself was not quite sure how to implement it.
On November 19, 2019, NBC News also interviewed Harris and emphasized Harris’ support for “mandatory gun buybacks.” Harris said, “We’ll have incentives for people to turn them in and we’ll buy them back.”
Harris went on to describe AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles owned by the general public as “weapons of war” and said there are “five million” such rifles in private ownership.
But the National Shooting Sports Foundation reports that since 1990 alone, “an estimated 19.8 million modern sporting rifles (MSRs)” have been in circulation for private ownership.
Breitbart News believes this means that nearly 20 million AR-15s, AK-47s and variants of both rifles are in private hands, and that law-abiding gun owners will have to surrender them if the Biden Administration enacts a mandatory buyback policy.
