The National Pulse reported Wednesday that House Democrats have introduced a bill to create a national commission to remove the Hoover name from the FBI’s headquarters building to reflect “racial, ethnic and gender diversity.
The FBI’s headquarters building in Washington, D.C., is currently named after J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI, who served for nearly half a century.
The six-page bill, introduced by Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-N.Y.), calls for the creation of a ”national commission to rename the J. Edgar Hoover FBI headquarters building,” but does not explain the reason for taking out Hoover’s name.
The bill says it wants to ”ensure that such renaming reflects racial, ethnic, and gender diversity.” The FBI’s mission and values and the ”values of the United States Constitution” are also listed as criteria.
The committee will consist of eight members. The bill was introduced in February and has been referred to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
According to the bill, no later than 30 days after the committee submits its final report, the FBI Director shall make a decision on whether to rename the FBI headquarters building based on the committee’s recommendation.
