China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to visit Japan next week, November 24-25, and is expected to meet with Prime Minister Kan Yoshihide and Foreign Minister Toshimitsugu Shigeru, according to several Japanese government sources cited by Kyodo News on November 18.
The sources said that Japan and China will hold the final stage of consultations to resume bilateral contacts affected by the neo-crowning outbreak. The Japanese side, on the other hand, plans to ask the Chinese side to take measures against Chinese official vessels entering Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands (China’s Diaoyu Islands).
This will be Kan’s first meeting with Chinese government dignitaries since he became Japan’s prime minister. However, on the issue of Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping’s visit to Japan as a state guest, sources say that the Japanese side intends to “prioritize the response to the neo-crowning epidemic” and will not discuss the issue.
On the same day, Kan met with U.S. Marine Corps Commander Major Berger at the Prime Minister’s residence and confirmed that he would continue to strengthen regional deterrence capabilities. In response to China’s active maritime activities, both Japan and the U.S. expressed serious concern and strong opposition to “intensified unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East and South China Seas.
