Anti-coup demonstrations heat up as Britain advises citizens to leave Myanmar

As violence heats up after Myanmar’s military toppled top civilian government leaders like Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 1, the U.K. today asked its citizens to leave the country and advised them to stay Home if they are unable to leave.

Burma’s military government has been increasingly harsh in its crackdown on daily protests and has killed at least 70 people, according to UN human rights investigator for Burma Thomas Andrews.

The unrest in Burma has prompted Britain to ask its citizens to leave the country, warning that “political tensions and unrest are rife and violence has escalated since the junta seized power.

The British Foreign Office said, “Unless there is an urgent need to stay, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises British nationals to leave Burma by commercial means.”
