Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) signed a bill March 8 to end mass mail-in voting and to stop the counting of absentee ballots after Election Day.
“It is our duty and responsibility to protect the integrity of every election,” she said in a statement. “This legislation enhances uniformity by providing consistent provisions for Iowa election officials, including Election Day, absentee voting, database maintenance and other clear appeal procedures for local county auditors.”
The legislation also requires polls to close an hour earlier, changes the Time from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and shortens the time for early voting from 29 days to 20 days before an election.
Reynolds added, “All of these additional measures increase transparency and accountability and give Iowans more confidence to vote.”
“The law also prohibits election officials from sending absentee ballot requests to voters without requesting an absentee ballot,” the statement said, adding, “The law will require that absentee ballots must be received by the deadline for voting on Election Day and that the ballot must be delivered by the voter, a Family member, household member or designated janitor. “
In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that Raquel Rodriguez, a woman, was charged with “unlawfully assisting people to vote by mail and unlawful possession of an official ballot.” In a statement, Paxton said: “This is a victory for the integrity of the election and a strong signal that anyone who tries to defraud the people of Texas, deny them the right to vote or undermine the integrity of the election will be brought to justice.”
In Mississippi, a judge noted that 84 percent of the mail-in ballots in local congressional elections were fraudulent.
Last week, the House passed the HR1 election reform bill under Democratic control. The bill legalizes mail-in ballots across the board, requires all 50 states to turn election oversight back to the federal government, makes voter registration mandatory and reduces access to voter ID to weaken the election oversight process, among other things. Critics say the approach will lead to a constitutional crisis in U.S. elections.
