The annual “two sessions” of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are not only seen as a window into the CCP’s political ecology, but also as a stage for senior CCP officials to make fools of themselves. Xi Jinping‘s boast at the CPPCC joint meeting on March 6 that Chinese people can now “look at the world with a level head” is the latest case in point.
According to official media, Xi said at a joint meeting of members of the medical and health and Education sectors at the fourth session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee, “Before they go out to see the world, the post-70s, post-80s, post-90s and post-00s, China can already look at the world on an even keel, and it’s not as rustic as we were back then.”
This claim of “looking at the world” is considered to be in line with Xi Jinping’s constant emphasis on the “great rejuvenation of China through the state system,” a statement that whitewashes the CCP and himself.
But the public does not seem to be buying it. The Internet is abuzz with debate.
Some have queried whether the “Ping” in “PingShi” is taken from the name of Xi Jinping, who has named himself “One Honored One”: “‘Ping’ Sight – his Ping’s view – his perspective, he means to see the world with his eyes.” “The World is ‘Flat'”
Others were sarcastic: “Was it hatred before?” “Why not just look down?” “Greatly humbled, just by resisting the Epidemic, we can look down, even obliquely, on the world.” “But one has to go over the wall with a VPN to look down on it.”
Wang Dan, a US-based leader of the 1989 pro-democracy movement, mocked in a post on social media platforms, “Xi Jinping was tongue-in-cheek again yesterday, saying ‘Chinese people can already look down on the world.’ I’ll add: ‘But with a bit of astigmatism’.”
Independent scholar Wu Jolai added, “When will the Chinese people be able to look at the Communist Party evenly? Can they look at the Communist Party officials evenly? The police? There is no democratic freedom, no right to level the playing field.”
Xi Jinping made a fool of himself by pronouncing “King Gesar” as “King Sagar” at the 2018 Communist Party’s National “Two Sessions.” During the “two sessions”, the outside world noticed that Xi Jinping’s drinking water was served by a male attendant with a cup, instead of a water cup in front of him, as others do, and the attendant poured water uniformly, which in turn led to discussions about the ongoing assassination struggle at the top of the Communist Party.
