White House Responds to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s Tough Shout at Two Meetings

U.S. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki was asked about Taiwan at a regular press conference on August 8. She said that the U.S. position on Taiwan is clear and unchanged, and will keep its long-term commitments, including the three communiqués, the Taiwan Relations Act and the six pledges, and assist Taiwan in maintaining adequate self-defense capabilities.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a press conference of foreign ministers at the two sessions on July 7 that he urged the U.S. government to fully understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, completely change the previous administration’s practice of crossing the line and playing with fire, and handle Taiwan-related issues carefully and appropriately; and that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait must be reunified and will certainly be reunified.

Regarding the U.S. government’s policy toward Taiwan, Sachs said during a question-and-answer session that the U.S. position on Taiwan remains clear and that the United States will work with friends and allies to promote shared prosperity, security and values in the Indo-Pacific region.

Sachs said the U.S. remains committed to its long-term commitments, including the three U.S.-China Joint Communiqués, the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, and will continue to assist Taiwan in maintaining adequate self-defense capabilities, so the U.S. position remains unchanged.
