People protesting the military coup in Myanmar have now taken to hanging women’s skirts and even underwear in columns across the street to delay the military and police in their pursuit. Because according to Burmese tradition, it is bad luck for men to walk under women’s skirts.
AFP reported that a 20-year-old protester, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said, “We hang cage ki (longyi, as Burmese tube skirts are called) across the street because we traditionally believe that if we pass underneath it, we might lose our good luck.”
The man added, “Today the younger generation doesn’t believe in this, but the military still believes in it and it is their weakness. So in an emergency situation, if they come towards us, we might have more Time to run away.”
The film posted on the community’s website shows Burmese police officers taking away hanging columns of clothes before walking across the street. Myanmar traditionally believes that walking underneath clothing that covers a woman’s private parts is not only bad luck, but also unmanly.
