After nearly a year-long strict economic blockade policy, California restaurants have seen a wave of closures due to their inability to operate properly, and to this day, most counties are still ordered to ban open dine-in restaurants. But recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom (Gavin Newsom) is suspected to have been caught violating the ban again by dining indoors at a Mexican restaurant, his spokesman later clarified and denied the claim, but it is difficult to calm the discontent of Californians, and the call for the removal of Newsom from office is getting louder.
According to a short video posted on Newsom’s Shakeology account in late February, he and comedian George Lopez had an interactive conversation about vaccinations. The video was shot inside a Mexican restaurant called Los Amigos in Fresno, which is in the worst purple level of the outbreak according to Newsom and is not allowed to open for indoor dining.
Officials explained that Newsom was only visiting the restaurant owner and was not dining indoors. But the incident continued to fester, and a number of videos and photos taken that day went viral online.
One of them shows Lopez unmasked posing with someone inside the restaurant on his shoulder while Newsom appears in the background; another picture shows Newsom standing in front of a table filled with Food and drinks inside the restaurant.
Chef Andrew Gruel, owner of the famous restaurant chain Slapfish, said in his personal tweet, “California is the only state that bans indoor dining. Industry insiders say it’s a bombshell. Newsom held an event inside the restaurant and also posted a video of a group of people ‘eating and drinking’ (see photo). Are they proving that this is Ok? If it’s OK for them, then open it (the restaurant) all the way up.”
Gruel, who had previously criticized Newsom’s long-standing policy of blocking businesses and called for Newsom’s resignation, commented again on the matter on March 1, saying that while many people helped Newsom with explanations. But Newsom and his group were stranded for more than an hour in a restaurant where indoor dining is prohibited, which in itself is out of order; secondly, Lopez was not wearing a mask; and thirdly, they ate and drank indoors, which is highly ironic.
“If we had done that, we would have been fined. Restaurants have been creating creative outdoor environments where people can wait outside for food because people aren’t allowed to wait indoors …… but it’s perfectly fine for Gov. Newsom to do that?” This strikes him as absurd. “Newsom broke the rules it set for itself. This happens over and over again.”
The disclosure of the scandal of Newsom’s visit to the restaurant is not the first Time. As early as last November, Newsom was revealed to have brought his wife to a birthday party at a French restaurant in Napa County, when California had a strict ban on dinners.
After the scandal came to light, Newsom publicly apologized, admitting to violating his own ban on parties of more than three people, but claiming the party was held in the open air at the restaurant.
Since then, the popular “Recall Gavin 2020” campaign has gained momentum, with the number of signatures supporting Newsom’s recall surging by 400,000 in a short period of time.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has pointed out the hypocrisy of Newsom’s authoritarian attitude toward California residents while dining at luxury tourist restaurants, keeping his business open and sending his children to face-to-face private schools.
A few months later, Newsom was once again accused of violating the ban on restaurant visits, and the discontent of California voters was once again stirred. Voter Gloria said, “Remove this incompetent and corrupt governor. We need to save our state, and we and send a clear signal that we need an honest government that will actually serve law-abiding citizens.”
Cleland said, “Again? If so, open everything up! To hell with his order to open everything up, including all those parks.” A large number of voters have also left online messages calling for Newsom’s removal from office.
The California “Recall Newsom 2020” campaign is now in its final stages, and as of March 3, volunteers across the state have successfully collected 1.927 million signatures, breaking the reservation threshold. According to the regulations, March 17 is the deadline, the collected signatures can be certified to meet the state government’s requirement of 1.5 million valid signatures, then the referendum process to recall Newsom can be successfully launched.
Voters sarcastically said, “Newsom was caught again at such a critical moment, he is really a most powerful helper in the recall campaign. Since he doesn’t care, let’s wait to be recalled after March 17.”
