High Court adjourns bail review for 11 in democratic primary case, all interim bail applications denied

The High Court held a hearing to review the bail of 11 people in the pro-democracy primary election case, and police stepped up security outside the court.

The High Court decided on Saturday (6) to postpone the review hearing to next Thursday and Saturday, to be handled in two days.

The High Court has strengthened security outside the morning, there are a dozen uniformed police officers stationed, the same case has been released on bail Lu Zhiheng, Yang Xueying and other four people to the court to observe.

The 11 defendants were divided into three groups, including He Qiming, who was staying in hospital and was absent from the hearing. National Security Law designated judge Du Li Bing said, this Time only to instruct the hearing, will not deal with bail matters. She said that the Department of Justice had earlier indicated to the court that it wished to apply for exemption from the hearing under the summons, but she believed that the relevant documents were also important to the defense; she also noted that the earlier hearing in the Magistrates’ Court had not gone as smoothly as expected, but believed that the magistrate had done his best at that time.

After considering many factors, it was decided to postpone the review hearing to next Thursday and Saturday for two days, with about one hour reserved for each defendant, and to ask the Department of Justice to submit the summons, affidavit and written statement to the court on Monday.

As for the defense, it expects to review the bail process on the same day. To Li Bing believes that in order to be fair, should be obtained after all the prosecution documents before deciding more reasonable, repeatedly stressed that the case should not be handled hastily.

The first batch of defendants, senior barrister Pan Xi on behalf of Zheng Da Hong applied for provisional bail until the next court, was rejected by the judge.

At 7:00 a.m., dozens of people and nearly 30 journalists had lined up at the High Court to get their chips, and nearly 40 police officers were on guard. Forty-seven pro-democracy activists were accused of organizing or participating in the Legislative Council primary election, suspected of conspiracy to subvert state power. President Judge So Wai-tak has granted bail to 15 of them, the Department of Justice waived review of Yang Xueying, Liu Weicong, Lu Zhiheng and Lin Jingnan bail decision, four people were released on Friday night. As for the rest of the defendants who were not granted bail, 24 of them will apply for bail again next Friday.
