Brazil holds first municipal elections during epidemic

On the 15th of local time, Brazil held the first round of voting in municipal elections. This was the first time in Brazil’s history that an election campaign was held during an epidemic. Brazil’s political elections adopt a compulsory voting system, except for the 16 to 18 years of age, and people over 70 years of age and those unable to read and write, to vote voluntarily, other citizens of the right age must participate in the vote. As a result of the epidemic, Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court ruled that voters of voting age who had been infected with the new coronavirus for 14 days prior to municipal election day or who had a fever on the same day could refrain from voting, provided they had a medical certificate.
