People gathered in the streets of the central Burmese city of Mandalay on Thursday (March 4) for the funeral of a 19-year-old woman shot dead a day earlier during anti-coup protests in Myanmar, the BBC reported March 5.
Kyal Sin, whom people called an “angel,” was wearing a T-shirt with the words “Everything will be fine” when she died. According to Burmese netizens and several Taiwanese media reports, Kyal Sin, who was of Chinese descent and whose Chinese name was Deng Jiaxi and English name was Angel (Angel), worked as a dancer in Mandalay and was also a taekwondo champion.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media, with many calling her a hero.
Since the Feb. 1 coup in Myanmar, the country has been enveloped in mass protests demanding an end to junta rule and the release of detained democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
So far more than 54 people have been killed by security forces during the protests, according to the U.N. human rights office. And other reports put the number much higher. Wednesday (March 3) was the bloodiest day since the coup, with 38 protesters killed across the country.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on Burma’s security forces to “stop the egregious crackdown” on peaceful protesters.
Dozens of countries have now condemned the violence in Burma, but the coup leaders have largely ignored it.
