As school districts across the country consider full or partial restart of campuses closed due to the Epidemic, a “double standard” controversy has erupted among teachers’ union executives. Matt Meyer, president of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers in California, led many teachers in opposing the reopening of campuses on safety grounds, but Meyer was exposed for sending his daughter to a private school that offers face-to-face instruction, sparking public controversy.

Guerilla Momz, a community group that advocates for school children to return to school, tweeted a YouTube video over the weekend, pointing out that Berkeley Federation of Teachers President Mel has been insisting that it’s not safe for people to send their children back to school, yet he was caught on camera sending them to a private school. The video was shared on YouTube over the weekend.
Mara Kolesas, former president of the PTA Berkeley Council, said in a media interview, “The real issue in this case is that Meier is putting fear ahead of science and putting the rights of teachers ahead of the rights of schoolchildren. That’s the problem.”
The Berkeley School District reached a tentative agreement with the Berkeley Federation of Teachers in February this year, agreeing to allow district schools to reopen their campuses in March and April, with the proviso that faculty members complete the new crown vaccination.
