Ivy League rock climbing class for people of color, white students can’t participate, accused of violating state law

The Gateway Pundit reported Sunday that Cornell University is offering racially segregated rock climbing classes for their physical Education that do not allow white students to participate.

Let’s take a look at the course description for Cornell’s rock climbing class for people of color, “Graduates of this course will have the knowledge and skills to climb safely and responsibly, and push themselves to new challenges. We will also discuss individuals and groups of color in rock climbing,” the original Kesei description also reads, “This class is for those who identify as Black, Native, Latino, Asian, or other people of color.”

So, literally, it was offered for everyone other than white students.

Campus Reform, an American conservative news site focused on higher education, contacted Cornell University and pointed out that the curriculum was set up to discriminate against white people. After receiving the complaint, Cornell changed the course description to, “Designed to allow Black, Native, Latino, Asian, or other people of color who are underrepresented in the sport of rock climbing to learn the sport and feel included and supported.”

Campus Reform, a conservative U.S. news site focused on higher education, is staffed by students as journalists, and the site receives nearly 10 million page views each year.

When Campus Reform reached out to Cornell’s senior director of media relations and journalism, the director claimed that all Cornell students are “welcome” to enroll in rock climbing courses for people of color. The media news director added, “While the original description of the course represented a particular focus on inclusion, there was never any intent to exclude non-minority students. “

Campus Reform noted that the New York State Human Rights Law “makes it unlawful” for “non-denominational educational institutions” to “deny services to students because of race, color, religion, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, military status, gender, age or marital status.”

The Gateway Pundit also describes that under New York State law, “students in all New York State schools are protected by federal, state, and local laws against discrimination based on categories such as race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and disability.”
