Biden’s attitude toward Meng’s case raises concerns

Secretary of State John Blinken on Feb. 26 expressed strong U.S. support for Canada‘s demand that Beijing release two Canadians. Earlier, U.S. Vice President Harris also made a similar statement to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. These signs have raised concerns about the Biden administration’s attitude toward the Meng Wanzhou case.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (Reuters) – The United States strongly supports Canada’s demand for the immediate and unconditional release of two Canadian citizens detained in China, U.S. Secretary of State John Blinken said on Friday.

The arrest of huawei‘s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou by Canada comes shortly after Canadian businessman Michael Spavor and former diplomat Michael Kovrig were each detained by China in December 2018.

U.S. Secretary of State John Blinken held a videoconference with Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau on Feb. 26.

Earlier, U.S. Vice President Kamala Devi Harris He Jinli spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and expressed his willingness to assist in freeing the two Canadians detained by China.

But it is not yet known how Washington will broker the release of the two Canadians from Beijing. Concerns have been raised over whether the Biden Administration will make a secret compromise with Beijing over Meng.

Meng was accused by the U.S. of bank fraud in a deal with Iran and asked Canada to extradite her to the U.S. to appear in court in accordance with an extradition law signed by the two countries.

Meng is currently under residential surveillance at her mansion in Vancouver. The two Canadians, Sparvo and Kang Mingkai, are being held in separate Chinese prisons.
