McConnell: If Trump gets the party’s presidential nomination, absolutely support

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) heads to the Senate floor on Jan. 26, 2021.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Mitch McConnell) said Thursday (Feb. 25) that he would “absolutely” support former President Donald Trump (Trump) if he wins the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2024.

But at the same Time, McConnell also said that he believes that the most important thing for the Republican Party is to focus on the 2022 midterm elections.

McConnell’s interview with Fox “Special Report” host Bret Baier on Thursday began to weaken some of his previous statements by the Republican leader, who previously aimed to publicly draw a line in the sand with Trump.

“There’s a lot of things that can happen between now and 2024. I think there are at least four members (of the Republican Party) planning to run for president, along with governors and other members. Because there’s no incumbent, (so) it should be an open race.” He said.

If Trump were to secure the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, McConnell said he would absolutely support Trump.

In asking McConnell to say a few words to Trump supporters who may be worried about the future of the Republican Party, he said, “I would say to every Republican who supports us, center-right, let’s focus on winning the House and Senate in 2022. That will give the next presidential nominee the best chance of winning, no matter who he is.”

McConnell publicly rebuked the Jan. 6 congressional riot case hours before Trump left office on Jan. 19, all because Trump provoked his supporters. McConnell referred to the demonstrators who broke into Congress as a “mob,” stressing that they were “fed lies” because Trump insisted there was election fraud despite insufficient evidence.

After acquitting Trump in the second impeachment case on Feb. 13, McConnell said that Trump was “physically and morally” responsible for the congressional riots and warned that even if Trump was acquitted by the Senate, he could face civil or criminal charges.

The company’s main goal is to provide the best possible service to its customers.

Faced with a question from the moderator on how to respond to Trump’s allegations, McConnell replied Thursday (Feb. 25) that “the Republican Party is actually in a very good place.”

He said the Republicans gained seats in the House this time; when the outside world predicted that the Republicans would lose the Senate, the Republicans got fifty Senate seats; in addition, the Democrats did not flip a state legislature, the Republicans flipped two states as well as took the governor of a state.

“The Republicans had a very good day on Nov. 3,” McConnell said. “It’s unfortunate to lose the White House, but the Republican Party proved once again that this is a 50-50 country and we are very competitive and will be competitive again in 2022.”

In fact, what Trump kept repeating was precisely that the Republicans did well in the 2020 election and were statistically and common-sense unlikely to lose the White House; Trump’s dissatisfaction with McConnell was that McConnell was unconcerned about all the problems that surfaced during the election process and did not do his job to ensure the integrity of the election, not to mention his efforts to ensure that future elections are fair and impartial.

McConnell also dismissed speculation Thursday that there is a civil war within the Republican Party, saying that House Democrats are the real disunity.

He said, “Given House Speaker Pelosi’s slim margin in the House, the radicals are making it extremely difficult for her to function.”

Meanwhile, McConnell said, “I think the Biden administration has made it easy for Republicans to come together. I think we’ve reached a unified opposition to the extreme radical policies of this new administration.”
