Catalina Lauf, a former senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, announced she will run to challenge incumbent Rep. Adam Kinzinger (D-CA) for the 16th Congressional District seat.
Lauf’s newly formed campaign has accused Kinzinger of being an “anti-Trump RINO” who has turned his back on his constituents.
“RINO” is an acronym for “Republican in Name Only. Some conservatives use it to disparage Republican politicians in power and Republican officials who fail to follow conservative positions. In recent years, it has been used to refer specifically to Republican politicians who defy or criticize Trump.
“As president, Donald Trump has lifted millions out of poverty, invested historically in our schools, hospitals and communities, restored America as the most powerful nation in the world, and defended the right to Life, our Second Amendment, our borders and our faith,” Laufer added in a press release. “Nearly 75 million Americans support the ‘America First’ agenda, but it is now clear that Congressman Kinzinger is not one of them.”
The Epoch Times has reached out to Kinzinger’s office for comment on this.
Kinzinger is one of 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted to impeach Trump. In recent months, he has frequently criticized Trump and pro-Trump Republican elected officials on social media and in press conferences.
In 2020, Laufer ran for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District seat but lost the Republican primary to Jim Oberweis, who ultimately lost to Illinois Democratic Rep. Lauren Underwood.
“I am proud to announce that I am running for U.S. Congress,” she said in a press release, according to the Breitbart News. “Now, more than ever, America needs true conservative leaders to oppose Joe Biden‘s radical agenda and carry on President Trump’s legacy – and as a former advisor to his administration, I look forward to passing that torch. “
Rove then said she wants to “end the reign of the RINOs across the country,” suggesting that the split between anti-Trump Republicans and pro-Trump factions will not end soon. The few Republicans who previously voted to impeach or convict Trump have faced a huge backlash in their states. Since then, five of the seven Republican senators who voted to convict the former president have received harsh reprimands.
In a statement last week, Trump said he would put candidates who support his agenda in the Republican primary for Congress.
Where necessary and appropriate, I will support primary challengers who advocate for making America great again and support our America First policies,” he said. We need exceptional, strong, thoughtful and compassionate leadership.”
